A key update this year is the introduction of a mock UTME for underage candidates. This mock exam is not for admission purposes but is designed to help underage candidates test their readiness for future exams. To qualify for admission into universities, polytechnics, or colleges of education, candidates must be at least 16 years old by September 30, 2025. However, exceptionally gifted candidates under the age of 15 may be considered if they score at least 280 in the UTME and perform exceptionally well in their Senior Secondary Certificate and post-UTME exams.
Prof. Oloyede also reiterated JAMB’s age policy. Candidates must be 16 years old on or before September 30, 2025, to qualify for tertiary admissions. This age limit has been a subject of legal challenges in the past, with JAMB initially attempting to raise the minimum age requirement to 18. However, due to public outcry, the 16-year minimum age was upheld by JAMB.
In another key update, JAMB has announced that 870 computer-based test (CBT) centers have been screened and provisionally approved for the 2025 UTME. This is a significant increase from the 747 centers available in 2024.
Prof. Oloyede has also encouraged candidates to register for the mock exam if they want to familiarize themselves with the CBT format, even if they are not seeking immediate admission.
One of the most common mistakes students make is waiting until the last minute to study for exams. This leads to poor retention and weak performance. Start preparing months before registration begins. The earlier you start, the better your chances of mastering the necessary material and boosting your confidence.
Everyone learns differently. While some students may need only a couple of hours to grasp a concept, others may require more time. Be honest with yourself about your learning capacity and adjust your study plan accordingly. If a subject like Mathematics is a challenge for you, dedicate extra time to mastering it.
Study groups or online classes are highly beneficial for collective learning. Technology has made it easier to access quality tutorials from home. For example, Allschool JAMB tutorials have helped many students achieve their goals and excel in the UTME. Participating in a study group allows you to share information and tackle difficult topics with the help of others.
JAMB exams are unique. They consist of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) that require you to choose the best answer from a list of options. Understanding this format and practicing with sample questions will help you perform better during the real exam.
One major issue in UTME is time constraints. The exam is time-bound, and once the timer runs out, you’re automatically logged out. This means you need to be efficient. If you encounter a tough question, don’t linger on it. Move on to the next and come back to it later if time allows.
Unlike previous paper-based exams, the UTME is now conducted on computers. Students must be proficient in using a computer to navigate the exam efficiently. Familiarize yourself with CBT formats and practice answering questions on a computer.
It may sound unrelated to academics, but eating well and getting enough sleep are essential for optimal performance. Studying on an empty stomach or when fatigued will impair your ability to retain information. Take care of your body so your brain can function at its best.
Registering early for the exam can reduce stress and avoid last-minute issues. Make sure to arrive at your examination center early, at least 45 minutes before your exam time. This will ensure you’re relaxed and ready for the exam.
With JAMB’s announcement of new exam dates and regulations, 2025 offers an opportunity for all candidates to set themselves up for success. By understanding the exam format, adhering to registration timelines, and committing to a solid study plan, you can boost your chances of scoring 300+ in the UTME. Start preparing now and join the countless students who have successfully aced the JAMB exam. Good luck!
