Omowunmi, the widow of the late Nigerian musician Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, has accused her father-in-law, Joseph Aloba, of delaying the process of a DNA test to resolve a dispute concerning the paternity of Mohbad’s son.
The conflict, which has been ongoing since a Magistrates Court hearing on July 9, 2024, ordered both parties to attempt Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), has led to a deadlock, as closed-door negotiations failed to reach an agreement. The case centers on Mohbad’s father, who filed a suit requesting a DNA test to confirm the paternity of his grandson.
In a statement issued in October 2024 by Monisola Odumosu, a representative of the family’s legal team, Omowunmi reportedly agreed to undergo the DNA test. However, after the court directed the test to be conducted at a mutually agreed-upon laboratory, tensions rose as both parties rejected each other’s suggestions for locations. Omowunmi’s legal representatives proposed The Eko Hospital and Reddington Hospitals, but Mohbad’s father rejected these options, insisting on the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, which Omowunmi had previously contested.
Omowunmi’s lawyer, Salawu Akingbolu, further noted that despite her willingness to cooperate, Mohbad’s father’s legal team continued to make public statements, misrepresenting her position on the matter. Omowunmi expressed frustration over these claims and denounced the defamatory remarks, calling for an apology.
She also criticized Mohbad’s father for defaming her son on social media, branding him as a “bastard.” In a letter dated January 9, 2025, Omowunmi warned that if the delay continued, she would proceed with the DNA test independently and make the results public.
In response, Mohbad’s father’s legal team, led by Hillceetee Partners, denied the allegations, clarifying that no such statement had been made by their counsel, Taiwo Odumosu. They claimed that the media coverage was misinterpreted and that the issue at hand was the hospitals’ lack of response to inquiries about conducting the test. The legal team also announced that they would cease representing Mohbad’s father in the matter, setting the record straight.
