The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has warned corps members against drug abuse, emphasizing its damaging effects on their health, careers, and future prospects. The Director-General issued this warning during an address at an orientation camp, urging participants to stay away from illicit substances and remain focused on their national service.
He stressed that drug abuse has ruined many young lives, leading to addiction, mental health issues, and even criminal activities. He reminded corps members that as future leaders, they must uphold discipline and integrity while making responsible choices that will positively impact their future.
Security agencies working with the NYSC have also heightened surveillance to curb drug-related offenses within orientation camps and corps lodges. Any corps member caught in possession of illegal substances will face immediate expulsion and legal action. The DG further encouraged them to seek help if they are struggling with substance abuse, noting that rehabilitation and counseling services are available.
Corps members responded positively to the warning, acknowledging the importance of avoiding harmful behaviors that could jeopardize their future. Many expressed appreciation for the NYSC’s efforts in ensuring a drug-free service year while promoting positive lifestyle choices.
Stakeholders have called for more awareness campaigns on drug abuse among Nigerian youths, urging institutions and government agencies to intensify efforts in combating this growing issue. The NYSC remains committed to fostering responsible leadership and ensuring that corps members complete their service year without falling into negative influences.
