The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reminded corps members that they are not immune to legal consequences if they engage in criminal activities during their service year. Speaking at an orientation camp, the DG warned that corps members must adhere to the laws of the land, emphasizing that the NYSC uniform does not offer protection against prosecution for wrongdoing.
He urged corps members to conduct themselves with discipline, integrity, and respect for the law. He noted that while the NYSC provides an opportunity for personal growth and national development, it does not shield anyone from the repercussions of criminal behavior. He advised them to avoid illegal activities, including fraud, drug abuse, and any form of misconduct that could tarnish their reputation and that of the scheme.
The DG further stressed the importance of maintaining a positive image, urging corps members to be ambassadors of good conduct wherever they are posted. He assured them that the NYSC, in collaboration with security agencies, is committed to their safety but will not interfere in legal cases involving corps members found guilty of crimes.
His remarks come at a time when concerns about youth involvement in internet fraud and other criminal activities are rising. He encouraged corps members to take advantage of skill acquisition programs and leadership training provided by the NYSC to build a responsible and productive future.
Many corps members appreciated the DG’s message, acknowledging the need for discipline and accountability during their service year. They expressed their commitment to upholding the values of the NYSC and contributing meaningfully to their host communities.
