The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), is one of Nigeria’s most specialized and strategically positioned higher institutions. Located in Effurun, Delta State, FUPRE holds the distinction of being the first petroleum university in Africa and the first of its kind in Nigeria. The university was officially established in March 2007 by the Federal Government of Nigeria to fill a critical gap in the training of manpower for the nation’s energy sector. Since its inception, FUPRE has carved a unique identity in the academic landscape, focusing on developing highly skilled graduates for the oil and gas industry.

FUPRE was created in response to Nigeria’s urgent need for indigenous professionals who could contribute meaningfully to the exploration, refining, distribution, and management of petroleum resources. The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in core science and engineering disciplines such as Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Environmental Management, and Industrial Chemistry, among others. It also incorporates business-related programs like Science Laboratory Technology and Industrial Management, all tailored to the peculiar demands of the petroleum sector.

The institution is equipped with well-structured academic departments, highly experienced faculty members, modern laboratories, and hands-on technical training programs. FUPRE students benefit from a curriculum that is both practical and research-oriented, preparing them for real-world challenges in the energy and oil-producing sectors. Over the years, the university has collaborated with local and international petroleum companies, government agencies, and regulatory bodies to provide students with valuable exposure and internship opportunities.

As a federally funded institution, FUPRE enjoys government subsidies that help lower the cost of education compared to private institutions. However, due to the highly technical nature of its courses, FUPRE school fees are still relatively higher than those of general federal universities. Students are expected to pay school fees on a per session basis, not per semester, which covers tuition, registration, health services, examination charges, laboratory and workshop usage, and development levies. The fees may differ slightly depending on the faculty or program enrolled, especially for courses that require advanced technical equipment.

FUPRE also offers hostel accommodation for interested students, though spaces are limited and may attract additional charges. New students are required to pay acceptance fees after being offered provisional admission through JAMB, and these fees are separate from the main school charges. The university has a payment portal system where all transactions must be made electronically. Students are advised to pay their fees early, as early payment often attracts discounts and gives priority in accommodation allocation.

Moreover, students who fail to pay their fees on time may face challenges with course registration or be barred from writing exams. The school emphasizes discipline and financial responsibility, encouraging students to comply with payment schedules as published on the university’s official website and notice boards.

FUPRE is a top destination for aspiring engineers, scientists, and energy professionals who want to pursue a focused and rewarding career in petroleum and allied industries. The quality of training, cutting-edge facilities, and industry partnerships make it one of Nigeria’s most respected technical universities. Understanding the fee structure and making timely payments is essential for a smooth academic journey at FUPRE.

For the 2025/2026 academic session, tuition fees at FUPRE are structured based on student level:

  • New Students: ₦122,500 – ₦218,500
  • Returning Students: ₦49,550 – ₦136,500

Note: Some faculties may charge slightly higher due to laboratory, field work, or technical requirements.
