The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced a groundbreaking increment in the monthly allowance for corps members, raising it to N77,000. This development marks a significant shift aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerian graduates participating in the mandatory national service.
During a press briefing held in Abuja, the DG highlighted that the initiative is part of a broader plan to uplift the morale of corps members and ensure their financial stability while serving the nation. The increment comes as a long-awaited relief for thousands of youth who often struggle to meet basic needs during their service year.
In addition to the enhanced allowance, the NYSC has unveiled a new transportation initiative, introducing buses to ease mobility challenges faced by corps members nationwide. The DG emphasized that the buses would not only provide affordable transport options but also ensure corps members’ safety during official and personal trips.
The announcement has sparked widespread reactions among current and prospective corps members. Many have expressed gratitude for the improved conditions, seeing it as a step toward addressing the financial challenges associated with the one-year service program.
According to the DG, this move aligns with the government’s commitment to empowering youth and fostering national unity. He assured stakeholders that the scheme remains committed to addressing other pressing concerns, such as accommodation and healthcare, to create a holistic support system for corps members.
The newly introduced measures are expected to take effect immediately, with corps members across the country set to benefit from the improved allowance in the coming payment cycles.
