In a move aimed at bolstering the safety and welfare of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, the Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, assured the public that corps members will no longer be posted to areas experiencing security threats. Speaking to the 2024 Batch ‘C’ Stream 11 corps members in Katsina, Ahmed emphasized that ensuring the safety of corps members remains a top priority for the organization, especially in light of rising security concerns across some regions.
Ahmed, in his address, made it clear that the NYSC will continue to assess the security situation across the country. He assured the newly deployed corps members that they would only be posted to regions deemed safe and secure for service. “We will not send our corps members to areas where security challenges and threats exist,” he said, reinforcing that the organization is committed to safeguarding the well-being of its members throughout their service year.
The assurance comes amidst growing concerns about the security of corps members, especially in certain regions that have been prone to violence or unrest. The NYSC has repeatedly stated that it will take proactive measures to avoid placing its members in vulnerable situations. Corps members, according to Ahmed, can be assured that wherever they are posted, their safety is guaranteed, and the environment is secure for them to serve effectively.
While emphasizing security, Ahmed also addressed the welfare of the corps members. He announced that from February, there would be a significant increase in the monthly allowance for corps members, a gesture that highlights the government’s commitment to supporting them during their service year. “Once the budget is passed, by next month, you will begin receiving N77,000 instead of the usual N33,000,” Ahmed stated, noting that this adjustment was made in the 2025 Federal Government budget. This increase is expected to ease the financial challenges that corps members often face, providing them with better resources to carry out their duties.
The announcement was met with relief and enthusiasm among the corps members in attendance, as the increase in allowance coupled with the assurance of safety reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to prioritize the well-being of young Nigerians in the national service program.
The NYSC’s commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all corps members, as well as the financial boost through the allowance increase, is expected to positively impact their morale and productivity as they serve their country.
As the NYSC continues to focus on security, safety, and welfare, the reassurance from the Director-General stands as a step in the right direction for the organization and its corps members. The increased allowance, along with the attention to security concerns, further strengthens the value of the NYSC program as an important component of national service and youth development.
