Anambra State has recently experienced a series of fire outbreaks, prompting the state’s Fire Service to issue an urgent fire safety warning.
Fire at Practicing Primary School in Awka
On Saturday evening, a fire broke out at the Practicing Primary School, located inside St. Stephen Anglican Church, Umubelu, Awka. The blaze, which was attributed to bush burning, damaged portions of the school’s roofing materials. Thankfully, firefighters from the Anambra State Fire Service arrived promptly, containing the fire before it spread further. No casualties were reported.
Chukwudi Chiketa, head of the Media and Publicity Unit of the state fire service, confirmed that the distress call was received at 4:40 pm, and firemen quickly contained the fire within an hour. He urged residents to clear dry grasses and avoid fire-related activities during the dry season to prevent such incidents.
Fire at Lord’s Plaza, Onitsha
Earlier the same day, a fire broke out at Lord’s Plaza in Onitsha Main Market, damaging two lock-up shops. The distress call was made at 6:10 am, prompting a swift response from the fire service. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, but no casualties were reported. The fire service reminded the public, “Fire kills, but we can prevent it,” emphasizing vigilance and caution.
Fire at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Campus
A third fire incident occurred on Friday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University campus in Awka. The fire broke out behind the Security Office but was quickly contained by firefighters, and no damage or injuries were reported.
The Anambra State Fire Service continues to urge residents to prioritize fire safety, especially during the dry season, to avoid further tragedies.
