Did you know hair relaxers could be a contributing factor to fibroids? While natural hair can be tough to maintain, many women turn to relaxers to manage their hair. However, relaxers come with hidden dangers, potentially leading to fibroids, a non-cancerous growth in the womb that can lead to fertility problems and birth complications.
Do Hair Relaxers Cause Fibroids?
Fibroids are common among Black women, who are disproportionately affected by them. Studies show that the rate of hospitalization for fibroids is three times higher for Black women than for Caucasians. Furthermore, Black women are two to three times more likely to undergo a hysterectomy and seven times more likely to undergo a myomectomy, a surgery to remove fibroids.
A study of 7,000 women found that those who regularly used chemical hair straighteners, such as relaxers, were two to three times more likely to develop fibroids. In addition, a separate study assessed hormone-interfering chemicals found in 18 different hair products, including leave-in conditioners, root stimulators, and relaxers. It was concluded that some chemicals used in Black women’s hair products were linked to asthma and endocrine disruption, with relaxers also being linked to an increased risk of cancer.
The Journal of the National Cancer Institute reported that individuals who frequently used chemical hair straighteners had twice the risk of developing uterine cancer.
Chemicals to Avoid in Hair Relaxers:
- Phthalates
- Formaldehyde
- Sodium Hydroxide (Lye)
- Parabens
When these chemicals are applied to the scalp, they can enter the body through absorption. Since the scalp is directly linked to the body system, these harmful chemicals can have far-reaching effects.
How to Straighten Your Natural Hair Safely
If you’re looking to straighten your natural hair without the risks associated with relaxers, there are several safer alternatives:
- Blow-Drying with a Comb Attachment
- Start with freshly washed and conditioned hair.
- Apply a leave-in conditioner and heat protectant spray.
- Section your hair and use a blow dryer with a comb attachment to straighten from root to tip.
- Finish with a cool shot to set the style and ensure smoothness and longevity.
- Silk Press
- Start with clean, deep-conditioned hair.
- Apply a high-quality heat protectant to dry hair.
- Section the hair and use a flat iron on medium heat. Run the iron slowly from roots to ends while combing through with a paddle brush.
- Avoid passing the flat iron over the same section repeatedly to prevent heat damage.
- Roller Set for Bouncy, Straight Hair
- Apply setting lotion or mousse to damp hair and section it into parts.
- Wrap each section around a large roller.
- Allow the hair to air-dry naturally or use a hooded dryer.
- After drying, gently comb through to achieve a smooth, bouncy straight look without direct heat.
These techniques offer safe alternatives to relaxers, helping you manage your hair while reducing the risk of fibroids, cancer, and other potential health issues.
