Vice President Kashim Shettima has lauded the brilliance and courage of Nigerian Tribune columnists Dr. Lasisi Olagunju and Professor Farooq Kperogi, praising their intellectual contributions and fearless critiques of governance. Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the launch of Persona Non Grata, a book authored by Ismail Omipidan, Shettima expressed admiration for their uncompromising stance on national issues.
The event, held at the prestigious Abuja Continental Hotel, drew an audience of notable figures, including senior government officials, political heavyweights, and top media executives. In his speech, the Vice President singled out Dr. Olagunju, a seasoned columnist and editor of Saturday Tribune, for his remarkable literary prowess and thought-provoking analysis.
Shettima described Olagunju as a writer whose words resonate deeply with readers, highlighting his skillful use of African proverbs to deliver compelling narratives. He humorously noted his initial surprise at Olagunju’s modest appearance, contrasting it with the larger-than-life impression created by his formidable writings.
“Love him or hate him, you cannot ignore him,” Shettima declared. “Dr. Olagunju writes ferociously and beautifully. He is an intellectual who challenges the status quo, and we need his caliber of thinkers to shape our society. I’ll ensure we bring him to Abuja to contribute more directly to national development.”
Turning his attention to Professor Farooq Kperogi, the Vice President acknowledged his assertive and often sharp critiques of the current administration. Shettima admitted that while Kperogi’s observations can be harsh, they reflect a commitment to truth and accountability that surpasses the flattery of sycophants.
“Farooq Kperogi is a critic who doesn’t sugarcoat his opinions,” Shettima said. “His insights, though tough to digest at times, are rooted in sincerity and patriotism. Such voices are essential in keeping the government on its toes.”
Shettima’s remarks underscored the importance of critical journalism in a democratic society, highlighting the role of columnists like Olagunju and Kperogi in fostering informed discourse. He emphasized that genuine criticism, rather than blind praise, is what drives meaningful progress.
The launch of Persona Non Grata, attended by a cross-section of Nigeria’s elite, served as a platform to celebrate the power of the written word in shaping public opinion and holding leaders accountable. For Shettima, the event was an opportunity to champion intellectuals whose work transcends personal gain, focusing instead on nation-building.
The Vice President’s acknowledgment of these influential columnists resonated with attendees, reinforcing the vital role of fearless journalism in the pursuit of a better Nigeria.
