Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has declared a strong stance against pupils sitting on the floor in schools, stressing that his administration will not tolerate such conditions in the state’s educational institutions. Addressing the 2nd annual Primary School Teachers Vacation Course at Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to transforming the education sector in the state.
Dr. Idris announced that over ₦19 billion has been allocated to improve educational infrastructure, including the construction of mega schools, renovation of classrooms, and the provision of essential furniture across all 21 Local Government Areas of the state. He expressed, “I am a teacher, and the pain of every teacher and child is also my pain. Seeing any child sitting on the floor is unacceptable, and we are taking all necessary steps to prevent this.”
Key Educational Projects
The governor highlighted several key initiatives under the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), including the construction of laboratories, ICT centers, hostels, and classrooms. Other critical provisions include furniture, books, computers, and sports equipment. Additionally, plans to recruit 2,000 teachers are underway, with the screening committee’s report under review for approval.
Renovation and Investment in Education
Professor Suleiman Khalid, Chairman of SUBEB, shared that 789 classrooms have already been renovated, with more than 16,500 units of school furniture distributed. By the end of 2025, a total of 1,182 classrooms will have been fully refurbished to improve learning conditions across the state.
Dr. Usman Sani Tunga, Rector of Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, praised the government for its continued support in teacher retraining programs. Dr. Halima Bande, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, emphasized that the government’s substantial investments in education are aimed at creating an enabling learning environment for the state’s students.
